Student ICT Skills Programme:  Sample Assessment

 

Please note:  if working on this from home, save the files to your computer’s hard drive (ie C: drive) and not your user workspace.

 

Part 1: Word Processing

 

1.      Download the files Word Practice.doc, and Excel Practice.xls from the ICT Skills web pages, (http://www.caledonian.ac.uk/student/ictskills then click on the Assessment Files link), and save in your user work space.
Note: In the assessment proper, you will receive an email from an ICT Skills tutor, with two attached files.

2.      Start MS Word and open the file Word Practice from your user work space.

3.      Change the left and right margins to 2.7cm (or 1.06 inches).

4.      Change the line spacing for the first two paragraphs to 1.5 lines.

5.      Move the last sentence in the first paragraph to the start of the second paragraph.

6.      Underline the heading.

7.      Add a line at the end of the document which states the number of words in the document.  Spell-check and correct any errors in the document.

8.      Insert a header containing your name, Programme and Matric no.

9.      Add automatic page numbering to your document in the footer.  The page numbers should be right aligned.

10.  Add a footnote in paragraph 2 after ‘£45-£60’.  The text of the footnote should be: ‘These prices are subject to variation.’

11.  Change the list in the last paragraph to a bulleted list.

12.  At the end of the document, take a new page (insert a page break).

13.  On page 2 of your document, type the heading Types of Accommodation in Times New Roman font, bold, underlined and font size 14.  Centre the heading.

14.  Insert the following table (using a suitable Autoformat option):

14.  Re-save the Word Practice document to your user workspace.

 

Part 2: Graphics and Equations in Documents

 

1.      Move your cursor under the table at the end of your document and click.

2.      Insert any equation in to your document using Equation Editor (it does not have to be a real equation – you can make one up)

3.      Insert any piece of clip art into your document – resize it if necessary.

4.      Draw a simple diagram or picture using the Word Drawing facility (do not spend too long on this activity).

5.      Re-save the document to your user work space.

 

Part 3: Library Searching

 

1.      Open the library catalogue (the catalogue can be found at http://www.learningservices.gcal.ac.uk/library).

2.      Search the Library Catalogue to find the book 12 Steps to Study Success by Conrad Lashley. Click on the ‘Mark’ button to add this book to your Book List.

3.      Start a new Search in the Library Catalogue to find books on one of the following subject areas: palliative care, organisational change, electric circuits.  Select any one of the books you find and click on the ‘Mark’ button to add it to your Book List.

4.      Carry out a new search in the Library Catalogue to find the New Scientist journal. Add the details to the Book List by clicking on the ‘Mark’ button.

5.      Click on the ‘Marked’ link and (using File, Save As..) save the Book List to your user work space as a text file (.txt) naming it Sample Book List.

6.      Close the Library Catalogue.

7.      Go to the Library web page that lists Databases.(You will find this link in the Quick Links section of the Library home page)  Find the name of a database relevant to your own subject area.  Type the name of this database at the end of your Word Practice document.

8.      Choose an Internet gateway relevant to your own subject area, using the Library Subject Guides on the web(You will find this link in the Quick Links section of the Library home page).  Copy and paste or type the name and URL of the gateway at the end of your Word Practice document.

 

Part 4: Internet and Integration

 

1.      Open your Internet browser and go to location: http://www.caledonian.ac.uk/student/ictskills/general.html

2.      Copy any paragraph from this page onto a new page in your Word Practice document.

3.      Copy one of the pictures from this Web page to your Word Practice document, onto the same page as the text you have just copied.

4.      Add the following paragraph to end of your document:  ‘Sources from the Web should always be acknowledged by using the copyright symbol - ©’

5.      Search the Internet to find the web site of Glasgow Tourist Information Centre.  Note: a search engine can work well when you are looking for something specific.

6.      Save the results of your search as text file in your user workspace (Use Save As… option from the File menu, and save it as a Text File).  Give this file the name Web Search.

7.      Re-save your Word Practice document and close the Internet browser.

 

Part 5: Spreadsheets

 

1.      Start MS Excel and open the file Excel Practice from your user work space.

2.      Underline all column headings, and change the size of the headings to 14 points.

3.      In the cell immediately below the last accommodation (West End), type Total Places.  Insert a formula into the adjoining cell to total the number of places available.

4.      Create a chart showing the number of places available for each type of accommodation. Add a title to the chart and label it appropriately.

5.   Re-save the Excel Practice file and close the Excel application.

 

Part 6: File Management

 

1.      Insert the file Sample Booklist.txt at the end of the Word Practice document.

2.      Re-save the Word Practice document to your user workspace and close the Word application.

3.      Send an email to one of your friends, or your ICT Skills tutor and attach the following file:

                ·   Sample Book List

4.      Create a new folder in your user workspace calling it ICT Skills Practice.

5.      Move the 4 files (Word Practice, Excel Practice, Sample Book List.txt, Web Search.txt) from your user workspace to the ICT Skills Practice folder.

6.      Rename the Word Practice document to Final Practice.
