About IT Services

Corporate Applications

Staff in this area will tailor corporate applications packages to suit the information needs of the University, either by extending the functionality of the package in conjunction with the supplier or the implementation of information extraction/manipulation features of the package. Interaction with other Units will be required to provide information/training to users and to ensure desktop and central computer systems are appropriately configured.

Infrastructure Services

It is the responsibility of this unit to ensure that:

  • all IT systems upon which the other units depend are fully functional,
  • there is sufficient capacity to meet planned needs,
  • the information assets of the University are effectively protected,
  • ease of access for all users of University information/systems is enabled.

A free flow of information with the other Units is essential to maintain the appropriate levels of service and to ensure technical developments are integrated into services following procedures that minimise disruption of services to users.

User Support

The principal responsibilities of this unit are:-

The Service Desk which offers users (staff and students of the university) access to staff who can help with their IT problems by phone, email and in person. Full details of the Service Desk are available via the Staff Support or Computer Stuff for Students options on the sub menu on the left hand side of this page.

Second Line Support maintains all desktop computers, staff and student, across the University which are managed by IT Services. This involves IT staff visiting users to assess and fix faults.

Computer Lab Management ensures the smooth running of all  IT Services Computer Labs. This is managed by IT Services, ensuring optimum use of all lab space by considering timetabled classes, student demands, opening hours, staffing levels required outside core hours plus health & safety issues.  They also assist with organisation and co-ordination of computer exams, resits and special needs exams.
