Summer School
Summer School is available to ensure that students have every opportunity to gain entry to GCU degree programmes and that they are suitably prepared for their studies. As stated in the GCU Admissions Policy it can be used both to enable non-standard entrants to meet the entry requirements and standard entry students to gain/improve entry conditions. Summer School operates over a 12 week period but students usually only attend for part of this. Summer School offers support at different levels in a variety of subjects:
Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English and Learning Strategies / Adult Return to Study.
All students attending Summer School must have been referred by an admissions tutor and must have accepted a place on a degree programme at GCU.
The Summer School office monitor attendance and progress and will notify admissions staff when a student has successfully completed their Summer school programme.
Students may be referred to attend either SS Level 1 or SS Level 2 programmes.
For SS Level 1 programmes students are required to attend, on a part time basis, over a six-week period. Students attend SS Level 2 programmes on a full time basis, usually over a five-week period. In some cases (depending on qualifications) a student referred to a SS Level 2 programme, may be required to attend a bridging programme, prior to the start of their SS Level 2 programme.
Summer School Programme Information
| SS Level 1 |
SS Level 1 programmes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics provide short intensive units of study (40hours) and are designed for students with little or no previous knowledge in a particular subject but whose degree studies would benefit from a background in that area.
These SS Level 1 programmes will include a learning strategies element and an ICT skills element. |
| SS Level 2 |
SS Level 2 programmes provide intensive programmes of study in one of Biology, Chemistry and Physics (120 hours) to allow students to upgrade a Higher achieved at grade D to a grade C.
In some cases it may be possible for a student to undertake study at SS level 2 even if they have not taken this subject at Higher Level. However the student may be required to attend a12 week programme of study to achieve this. Please check with Summer School staff. |
