E-learning methods, such as Blackboard, are being used widespread and fully accepted and welcomed by students throughout most universities, including Glasgow Caledonian University. This has led to student requirements changing in that they expect all university information to be available online.
Therefore, to support the developing GCU eLearning Strategy which includes the managed learning environment, MyCaledonian and the virtual learning environment of Blackboard, I have developed a programme portal for BIM students. This progresses GCU towards becoming a fully integrated e-learning university.
The programme portal ensures that students are not only given appropriate ICT skills but are also exposed first hand to an environment and culture that is centred on e-business. Such experiences and knowledge can then be transferred and used in the student's workplace.
This online information source, integrated with the use of email, can provide a more effective means of student communication. It also allows greater efficiency and effectiveness in programme management and releases more staff time for student personal support and development.
Portal development
The portal provides standard programme reference information,
to be available as required throughout the semester, such as programme
hand-books as well as provision of particular information, as an 'electronic notice board' or provides links to further sites. The information is updated throughout the academic year, and includes Induction Week arrangements, Student Staff Consultative Group minutes, and module options.
Initial feedback from students shows that they the portal extremely useful and "contains all information that I need to know about the programme"
