Measurement and evaluation is a topic which has been discussed at meetings of Learning Services Managers this year. Materials were
developed and two sessions delivered on these areas by Bob Bissell.
A Measurement Group was established to take this forward, (John
Crawford, the late George McAleese, Marian Miller, Raymonde Murphy and
Bob Bissell) with the following remit:
to identify previous,
current and future evaluation methods being followed and consider their
purposes for Learning Services
to gather views, opinions
and ideas in relation to the ‘measurement focus’ of Learning Services
i.e. what should Learning Services be measuring and how should this be
done?
The group met 3 times, produced a report and delivered a staff
development session on the findings.
The report highlighted that there were many areas of good practice in
previous evaluation approaches. However, there was unanimous support for
the view that there should be a clearly defined, consistent
and co-ordinated approach to evaluation that would reflect the needs, purpose and service
functions of Learning Services.
The need to manage and implement a co-ordinated approach, with agreed
measurement targets and approaches was seen to be vital.
On the basis of this work Learning Services is producing an
evaluation strategy.
‘A measurement of the importance we place on quality is the
importance we place on measuring it’.
