Obituaries

Since the last issue of Synergy Learning Services has lost two valued members of staff through unexpected illness.

George McAleese died suddenly following a minor operation. George was a senior member of Learning Services who played a key role in the formation of the service. He joined the Glasgow College of Technology as an Assistant Welfare Adviser on 01.05.86 and was manager of Student Services with the College from 01.08.88. When Glasgow Caledonian University was formed on 01.04.93 he became Assistant Head of Student Services and assumed the role of Acting Head of Student Services on 01.06.02. George was a well liked and effective member of staff who had a calm, confident, and reassuring manner.

We also lost Denis O'Neill in July of this year. Denis was an IT professional in C&IT Services and had worked at the institution since 01.10.84. He started work at the College of Technology as a programmer/adviser and later became a Computing Officer (Applications) in the Caledonian Business School. At the formation of Learning Services Denis was appointed to the post of IT Professional working in server administration and played a major part in the establishment of the current server architecture that is used by the University.
