Public Internet Access Points Initiative
This initiative from the Scottish Executive is designed to create 1000 new Internet access points across Scotland where current provision is poor. The criteria normally restrict the initiative to urban areas where there is no public access within 1 mile. However, because of the involvement of Learning Services as part of the REAL network in Glasgow and the Caledonian Library and Information Centre (CLIC) being a branded Learndirect Scotland centre this rule has been set aside.
As a result four PCs, supplied by the
Scottish Executive, have now been installed in CLIC, at the former enquiry point on level one. These PCs dial out directly to the Internet, so don't use the HE funded Clydenet or Janet network and are available for public usage. Consequently users
do not need to wait for guest accounts and passwords to be set up to allow them to use computers on the University network. The machines have access not only to the bookstock but to the Internet as well. Learning Services is pleased to be part of this initiative and to be playing a part in developing Scotland's digital future by helping more people gain access to the Internet. This service to the community is part of the University's mission to be inclusive and entrepreneurial and to support the local community.
