Welcome
In this issue of Synergy we have collected together information on a
range of new learning related initiatives and projects. Many of these
have attracted external funding, which is always welcome, but more
importantly they will support the University's efforts in developing its
use of educational technology.
On the centre pages there is a brief question and answer article on
the new Learning Centre that will have been the subject of an exhibition
in the CLIC building by the time this issue is published. What
technologies we use in the Learning Centre and how we use them will be a
crucial factor in its success as a learning resource for our staff and
students. The success of the Learning Centre will also be assessed by
other factors. The Society of College, National, and University
Libraries when assessing new library buildings looks for space which
works well functionally, is flexible and adaptable, has a variety of
types of learning spaces, and is socially inviting. Key criteria also
include being high quality and humane, and inspiring people - but what I
like most of all is the final criterion that they use which is OOMPH -
that means a building that combines all of these key qualities to
capture the minds of users and the spirit of the institution.
